Artist's Comments
I took a Japanese Raku Pottery class this summer. It was a really short class (only two weeks), but was nonetheless loads of fun. There were basically only three projects that we had to accomplish and all were fairly open... pottery... blah blah... tea bowls... blah... vase or some sculpture. TAAADAAH!
The top two photos are of my first wheel-thrown bowl... EVER! The two below are of my second ever wheel-thrown bowl. The glazed vase was made using the coil technique. All three were bisque fired, but only the vase was glazed-fired. Ummmm, and after the vase was glaze-fired we did this thing called "reduction" where as soon as the piece comes out of the kiln you toss it either into a pit with grass at the bottom or into a barrel or something and close the lid. And then it smokes a lot. And pretty much instead of the clay turning out pink it ends up being black or a really dark, smokey gray color. It also does cool stuff to the glaze.
